Adapting to our quickly changing landscape amidst this COVID-19 crisis is difficult for us all. Not knowing what services are accessible for yourself or your loved one can cause additional stress. Our aim is to work with you to minimise this as much as possible. As occupational therapists, we are always dedicated to ensuring our clients are able to access high quality therapy across a range of settings, and that is no different right now.
At Allay Occupational Therapy, our dedicated team have been working our hardest to develop and implement innovative ways to deliver the range of developmental, psychological and neurological services that we offer via telehealth to enable us to provide our current and new clients the support that they need to reach their goals.
What is telehealth?
Telehealth refers to any medical services that are provided via a technology platform, most frequently involving a phone call or videoconference. Originally, telehealth was devised as a way to provide healthcare services to rural and regional populations, who may not have had access otherwise. But now in the technologically savvy and changing world that we live in, telehealth is growing in popularity and offers an ideal way for people to access services without needing to leave their home.
Through telehealth, our occupational therapists are able to provide individualised assessment and interventions for their clients utilising the highest quality, evidence-based tools and methods.
What are the benefits of telehealth?
There are a number of benefits to telehealth, both during this time of social distancing and as a way forward in delivery of accessible healthcare in the future, these include:
- Flexible schedule: Two-way communication in real time allows therapists and clients to arrange sessions without having to factor in other requirements for face-to-face sessions such as travel times
- Greater access: Increasing the flexibility of service also increases accessibility to Occupational Therapy for clients that may have barriers to access
- Preferred tool for communication: Our devices are used every day, and for many people, using a phone, tablet or computer is second nature
- Improved communication: Increased client control during the sessions may facilitate more open communication which in turn would increase our therapists’ ability to best support our clients.
