What is Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy is a person-driven health profession focussed on promoting health and well being through activity. The goal of occupational therapy is to enable people to participate in satisfying and meaningful activities of everyday life. Occupational therapists achieve this outcome by working with people, families and communities. We aim to enhance people’s capacity to engage in the activities they want to, need to, or are expected to do. Occupational therapists can also modify the environment to better support people to achieve their goals.
What will an Occupational Therapist do?
An Occupational Therapist will work with a person’s strengths and help their limitations so they can achieve their goals. To guide the steps towards this, an Occupational Therapist needs to understand the person and their capacities, their family and friendship systems, and the environments in which they spend their time.
A program of individualised assessments such as observation, history taking, questionnaires or profiling, provides insights into a person’s strengths and limitations. This information is used to guide an evidence based, innovative therapy plan devised in collaboration with you and delivered in your home, school or community. If you wish we can also include your family or other supports. Throughout the process, we maintain the aim of building a fulfilling and meaningful life.
