Therapy Assistant

A Therapy Assistant (TA) works alongside an Occupational Therapist (OT) to help put therapy plans into action. They provide extra support to make therapy more effective, helping individuals build skills and reach their goals in everyday activities. TAs follow the guidance of an OT to make sure therapy is practical, engaging, and suited to each person’s needs.

How Will the TA Work with Me?

A TA helps you practice skills at home, school, work, or in the community.
  • Bringing Therapy to Life – Guiding you through activities set by your OT.
  • Tracking Progress – Noticing changes and sharing updates with your OT.
  • Keeping It Fun & Motivating – Using engaging strategies to make learning enjoyable.
TAs help build confidence and independence wherever support is needed!

Benefits and Opportunities of a Therapy Assistant:

  • Increased frequency of therapy support and sessions: Allowing greater access to specialised therapy sessions to promote skill progression and goal achievement.
  • Intensive work to achieve a short term goal: Our TA’s have availability for intensive work for a goal that requires increased therapeutic input.
  • Allowing therapy across a range of natural environments: Our TA’s are able to work in a range of everyday environments, promoting skill practice and generalisation.
  • There are some activities that a TA does not do: Our TAs role does not include transporting people, medication support, or altering therapy plans.

How do the OT and TA Share Therapy Plans?

  • Collaborative Planning: The OT and TA regularly meet to discuss and update the therapy plan based on the person’s progress and any new assessments.
  • Continuous Communication: They maintain ongoing communication to ensure that the therapy provided is cohesive and tailored to the person’s evolving needs.
  • Information sharing: Sometimes topics might come up that are beyond a TA’s role, this may be where there are concerns for safety, wellbeing or welfare. In these cases, the TA will share with the OT to create an action and support plan.
  • Feedback and Adjustments: The TA provides feedback to the OT about the person’s progress and challenges, which helps in refining the therapy plan as needed.
