The Science of Sensory Processing and Regulation

Explore sensory processing and regulation and gain an understanding of how children develop sensory regulation skills. Learn about the challenges some children face and the factors that make sensory regulation more difficult for them.

What will you learn?

In this session, we’ll uncover the fascinating world of sensory processing and explore how it shapes a child’s attention, behaviour, and participation in the kinder day.

From sensory seekers to sensory avoiders, you’ll learn how children take in and respond to the sensory information in their world—and how this plays a vital role in emotional regulation and learning.

We’ll break down the senses and how differences in sensory processing can lead to challenges in play, learning, group time, and transitions.

You’ll leave with practical tools to support children through sensory sensitivities and build regulation-friendly routines across your day.

    Why this topic is important?

When we are in kinders we hear:
    • “He’s always on the move—jumping, crashing, spinning!”
    • “She can’t stand certain noises or clothes and melts down over them.”
    • “I don’t know if they’re not enjoying some activities, or something else is going on.”

Sensory needs often show up as tricky behaviours or emotional outbursts. Understanding the sensory system helps educators make sense of what they see and respond in ways that work for each child’s unique profile.
