Spotting Early Signs of Developmental Difficulties in Children
Early childhood educators are often among the first to notice when a child is experiencing developmental difficulties – but knowing what to look for, and how to respond with confidence and care, can make all the difference.
In this informative and practical session, we’ll explore the early signs of developmental difficulties that may present in the kinder room – from speech and language delays to challenges with motor skills, social interaction, behaviour, attention, and emotional regulation. You’ll learn how to observe and interpret these signs through a developmental lens, and understand when and how to initiate these conversations with families.

What will you learn?
Join us as we explore the early signs of developmental differences in children aged 3–5, and how to confidently identify when further support might be helpful. In this practical and insightful session, we’ll guide you through the early red flags in areas such as communication, social play, motor skills, emotional development, and sensory processing.
Gain clarity on what’s part of typical development and what might suggest a need for follow-up or further assessment. Whether you’re an educator, assistant, or leader, you’ll leave with greater confidence in raising concerns, speaking with families, and working with allied health professionals to support children early and effectively.
Why this topic is important?
When we are in kinders we hear:
• “I don’t know if it’s anxiety, autism, or something else.”
• “There’s something different, but I’m not sure how to talk about it with parents.”
• “They’re not keeping up with the other kids, but they have so many strengths in other ways.”
Educators are often the first to notice early signs of developmental difference. This can feel daunting, especially when the next steps aren’t clear. By learning what to look for—and how to approach it—you’ll feel more confident and supported in having these important conversations.
