Safe and Sound Protocol

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is an innovative auditory intervention designed to reduce stress, auditory sensitivity, and improve social engagement and communication. Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges based on his Polyvagal Theory, SSP is a non-invasive therapy that uses specially filtered music to train the brain to process sound more effectively, promoting a sense of safety and increased social connectivity.

Who can benefit from the Safe and Sound Protocol?

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) can benefit individuals of all ages who are seeking to improve their emotional regulation, auditory sensitivity, reduce stress and enhance their social engagement. It is particularly helpful for those experiencing challenges related to anxiety, trauma, sensory processing difficulties, and emotional dysregulation. Children, adolescents, and adults with conditions such as autism, ADHD, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or anxiety disorders can find significant relief through this program. Your occupational therapist will work with you to integrate your specific needs into the program, creating an individualised approach to the SSP aimed at optimising your listening experience.

How Does It Work?

SSP works by delivering therapeutic music that has been processed to highlight the frequency spectrum of the human voice. As participants listen to this music, their nervous system responds by becoming more balanced and regulated, leading to enhanced emotional and physiological states. This recalibration allows for improved processing of speech and environmental sounds, fostering better communication and social interaction. Crucially, SSP helps to regulate the autonomic nervous system and stimulate the vagus nerve, which is essential for controlling the body’s relaxation response and promoting a sense of calm and safety.

The 3 SSP Pathways

  1. Core: The foundational pathway that introduces participants to the program, using filtered music to engage the nervous system and promote a sense of safety and calm.
    2. Connect: Designed to enhance social engagement and communication, this pathway builds on the gains from SSP Core, focusing on fostering warmth in voice and facial expression.
    3. Balance: Aims to maintain and enhance the state of calm and balance achieved through the Core and Connect pathways, supporting ongoing resilience and emotional regulation.
