Exploring the Foundations of Behaviour
Why do they do that? Why don’t they just stop? Dive into the foundational principles of behaviour. Gain insights into the factors influencing behaviour (trauma, communication, sensory, regulation, disability and health) and discover effective strategies to support positive behaviour in young learners.
What will you learn?
his engaging session takes a deep dive into the foundations of behaviour—what drives it, what shapes it, and how to respond with understanding and intention.
We’ll move beyond surface-level “good” and “bad” behaviours and instead look at behaviour as communication, shaped by regulation, sensory needs, connection, and learning. From sensory seekers to sensory avoiders, you’ll learn how children take in and respond to the sensory information in their world—and how this plays a vital role in emotional regulation and learning.

Discover the role of brain development, attachment, and environment in how young children act—and what they need in the moment. Walk away with practical strategies to guide behaviour in a way that’s developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed, and effective for the whole group.
Why this topic is important?
When we are in kinders we hear:
• “He keeps hitting when he doesn’t get what he wants.”
• “She won’t follow instructions and always says no.”
• “We’re using so many strategies and nothing is working!”
Understanding behaviour at its root helps educators respond calmly and consistently, rather than react with frustration or confusion. This session brings a fresh, practical lens to everyday moments that feel hard.
Why Allay?
Allay’s paediatric OTs are trained in child development, trauma-responsive practice, and behaviour support. We bring this lens into real-world kinder settings, supporting teams to understand what’s driving behaviour and how to help children feel safe, understood, and ready to engage.
